Play a character with other people.
In GTA roleplay, you make decisions as a character within a community’s rules. The character might drive for a business, work in a garage, run a venue or create content. Other players respond, and a story develops through those interactions.
A useful first character has a simple job, a reason to talk to people and a goal. “I’m new to the city and looking for driving work” gives other players more to respond to than a character who already owns everything.
Choose a community before choosing a character.
Existing FiveM communities concern GTA V. Start with the official FiveM installation guide for current compatibility and setup requirements. Then read the particular server’s joining instructions, age policy, application requirements and rules. They vary by community.
Joining a Discord does not always grant playable access. A server may use applications, an allowlist, queues or other checks. Use its official links and do not pay someone in an unsolicited message to skip a process.
GTA6LARP is currently a community and development concept. It does not offer a playable GTA VI server. See the GTA 6 RP status guide for that distinction.
Terms you will see.
- IC / in character: what your character says, knows and does in the story.
- OOC / out of character: a conversation between the people playing, such as a rules or technical question.
- Metagaming: using information your character did not learn in the story, such as another player’s stream.
- Powergaming: forcing an outcome or action that leaves others no reasonable opportunity to respond; use the server’s own definition.
- RDM / VDM: terms communities use for prohibited attacks or vehicle attacks without an acceptable roleplay basis. Exact rules differ.
Make the first session easy to play.
- Read the server’s rules and setup instructions.
- Check your microphone and push-to-talk settings before you join.
- Give your character one ordinary goal and a reason to ask someone for help.
- Let another player respond rather than deciding the whole scene yourself.
- If something goes wrong, use the community’s support or report process instead of arguing in the scene.
For GTA6LARP, you can prepare now by choosing a character or business and introducing it to the community. A driver, mechanic or host can create just as much interaction as a wealthy business owner.
